How college support works and what changes after school
How to arrange learning support, adjustments and practical help at college, including what does and does not transfer from school.
The short answer
Contact the college learning-support team before enrolment and describe the barriers the student is likely to meet on their actual course. Ask what evidence is needed, which support the college can arrange, who decides, how teaching staff will know and what the student should do when support is missing. School records can inform the plan, but support does not necessarily transfer unchanged. Education plans and terminology differ across the UK, while transport, personal care and health support may involve organisations outside the college.
