Why does my child need extra time to process what I say?

The short answer

Your child may hear you immediately but need longer to identify the important words, connect them with the situation, hold the information in mind, decide what they think and organise a response. Noise, another task, anxiety, fatigue and overload can lengthen that process. A quiet face or delayed answer does not show that nothing is happening. Get near enough to be heard without demanding eye contact, say one clear message, then stop. Do not fill the pause with repetitions, new wording or several choices, because each addition may restart the work. Make important information visible and check what the child expects to happen next. Processing time is a description, not a diagnosis: persistent difficulties can also involve language, attention, working memory, hearing or health and may need individual assessment.

• Hearing a message, understanding it and producing a response are separate pieces of work.
• A delayed answer should not automatically be read as ignoring, refusal or lack of understanding.
• Repeating or rephrasing too soon can replace the message the child was still processing.
• Reduce language and competing input before deciding how long the child needs.
• Use visual or written information for plans and sequences that must remain available.
