Use this sheet after a difficult moment has passed. Choose one incident and record what you know before adding any interpretation. You are looking for possibilities and patterns, not trying to prove why your child behaved in a particular way.

StepWhat to considerYour notes
1. What happenedDescribe what you saw and heard. Avoid labels such as rude, lazy or attention-seeking.
2. The ten minutes beforeWhere were you? What was your child doing? What changed or was asked of them?
3. Physical needsCould tiredness, hunger, thirst, pain, illness or needing the toilet have contributed?
4. Other pressuresConsider noise, light, clothing, other people, communication, uncertainty, transitions and the difficulty of the task.
5. What happened afterwardsDid the incident lead to more space, attention, escape from a task, access to something or a quieter setting?
6. A possible explanationWrite one or two possibilities. Leave room for being wrong and avoid making a judgement about your child's character.
7. One change to tryChoose a small adjustment to the lead-up, the environment or the way the request is made.
