The short answer

Choose the shape of holiday before choosing the most impressive destination. Work out which features make ordinary days possible for your child: travel length, a separate sleeping space, predictable food, easy access to outdoors, a bath rather than a shower, a washing machine, quiet mornings or the ability to leave activities early. Ask the accommodation and transport providers specific questions and keep confirmation. Show the child what is known, mark what may change and keep a few familiar anchors. Plan one worthwhile activity at a time, with genuine rest and an exit route. Check passports, consent, insurance, health advice and medication rules early. A shorter trip, a familiar place or a holiday close to home can be a sound family choice.

  • Choose the holiday features that matter before comparing destinations.
  • Include travel, sleep, food, personal care and recovery in the decision.
  • Ask providers precise questions and confirm the arrangements offered.
  • Keep familiar anchors while explaining what will be different.
  • Protect siblings' and adults' needs without making one child carry the blame.
  • Complete current travel, health, consent and medication checks before departure.
