How support is organised in East Ayrshire

A child may need additional support for a short period or throughout their education. In East Ayrshire, begin with what is happening now: the task, setting or part of the day that is difficult, how often it happens and what the child needs in order to take part.

The child does not need to fit a fixed label before school staff can respond. Ask what the setting can change, how the family will be involved and when everyone will review whether the support is working.

Practical next steps

Ask the school to translate concern into a written action: who will provide the support, in which situations, how often and when it will be reviewed. If an assessment is proposed, ask what question it needs to answer and what help continues in the meantime.

Record NHS contacts by service, referral date and next expected step. When education and health staff are both involved, identify who will bring their recommendations together. A useful plan should show how professional advice changes the child's actual experience in class, at break times and during transitions.
