How support is organised in Inverclyde

Inverclyde is geographically compact, but families can still move between school, local teams and regional health services. Begin with the child's nursery or school and describe the difficulty at the point where it happens. Include learning, sensory demands, communication, transitions, attendance and the effect of holding things together through the day.

Ask what can be put in place immediately and how the school will judge whether it helps. Support should be described clearly enough that the family and staff can recognise when it is happening.

Inverclyde Council is responsible for education and publishes an additional support needs section covering local services and school support. The school is normally the practical route into education planning and can involve wider council teams when required.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde covers Inverclyde alongside several other council areas. Health services may therefore be based outside Inverclyde or use a regional name. Education decisions remain with Inverclyde Council. Enquire can provide independent advice about Scotland's additional support for learning system.

Practical next steps

Ask for a plan with actions, frequency, responsibility and a review date. If support is described only as access to a service, ask what the service will actually contribute and what happens between contacts.

For an NHS referral, record the named team and location. Consider travel and time away from school if appointments are elsewhere in the board area. Keep local council actions and regional health actions in one chronology so that gaps between them are easier to identify.
