How support is organised in Ceredigion

In Ceredigion, begin with the child's experience in their nursery, school or college. Describe what is difficult, where it happens and which changes have already made learning, communication or attendance more manageable.

The setting should consider what support it can provide and whether the child may have additional learning needs that require additional learning provision. A diagnosis is not the starting condition for that educational response.

Ceredigion County Council is the local education authority. Its ALN pages explain local support, individual development plans and parent-partnership advice. The council also describes an inclusive model in which most learners are educated in mainstream schools, with specialist resource centres attached to some settings.

Practical next steps

Ask the class teacher or ALNCo to record the concern, current support and review date. If an ALN decision is made, check that the child and family understand who will maintain any IDP and what additional learning provision it will contain.

Discuss language needs at the beginning of assessment and planning, including provision through Welsh where required. For health referrals, record the named service and location, then consider travel, missed learning and how recommendations will be used by school staff between appointments.
