How support is organised in Denbighshire

In Denbighshire, a useful first conversation starts with what the child is finding hard and what staff have observed over time. Include strengths and successful approaches as well as difficulties, because these help the school decide what to try next.

Ask the class teacher or ALNCo what support is available now, how it will be reviewed and what would lead the setting to consider whether the child has ALN.

Denbighshire County Council is responsible for education. Its ALN overview distinguishes universal provision from additional learning provision and explains local roles for early years, schools and further education. It also describes the place of an individual development plan when a learner has ALN and requires additional learning provision.

Practical next steps

Ask for the support cycle to be visible: the identified need, agreed action, intended outcome and review date. If an IDP is prepared, check that the additional learning provision is specific enough for the child and family to recognise when it is being delivered.

The Welsh system requires attention to the child's preferred language and to provision through Welsh where needed. Raise this early rather than after assessment or planning has begun. Keep any health referral under the named team, with dates and next actions recorded.
