How support is organised in Merthyr Tydfil

When a child needs more help to access education, the useful starting point is not a perfect explanation. It is a clear account of what is difficult, where it happens and what has already made a difference.

Its IDP guidance says the plan should record the learner's ALN, the agreed additional learning provision, who is responsible for delivering it and the outcomes being worked towards.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board's neurodevelopmental administrative team is based partly at Keir Hardie Health Park in Merthyr Tydfil, and appointments may take place at local children's centres. A health assessment can inform understanding, but it does not replace the setting's responsibility to act on known education barriers.

Practical next steps

Before a meeting, write down three things: the barrier, the adjustment or provision requested, and the change you hope to see. During an IDP discussion, make sure the learner's own communication and priorities are represented, including when they do not find formal meetings easy.

For NHS contact, use the health board's current referral information and record the team, date and expected next step. If school and health recommendations overlap, ask who will put each action into practice. Review whether the support is being delivered consistently, not only whether the paperwork has been completed.
