How support is organised in Pembrokeshire

A child may cope in one lesson or setting and struggle in another. In Pembrokeshire, take those differences to the school or setting and explain the demands involved, the impact on the child and what appears to help.

Ask what support is already available and what the setting will try next. If the child may need provision that is additional to or different from the usual offer, ask how the ALN decision will be made and how the family will take part.

Pembrokeshire County Council is responsible for education. Its current Inclusion and Additional Learning Needs section connects families with local provision, specialist services and parent-partnership information. The school ALNCo remains the usual first contact for a school-age concern.

Hywel Dda University Health Board covers Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire. Rural distance and the location of specialist teams may affect journeys and appointment times. SNAP Cymru provides independent ALN advice, while Llais supports people with questions or concerns about health and social care.

Practical next steps

Ask for the school response in practical terms: who will do what, how often, in which situations and when it will be reviewed. If an IDP is prepared, look for a clear description of the additional learning provision rather than broad statements of intention.

When a service is some distance away, include travel and recovery in the plan before accepting a recurring appointment pattern. Record the receiving health team and referral date. Ask how any professional advice will reach the staff who work with the child each day.
