How support is organised in Powys

Across a large rural county, the right service may be some distance from home or school. That makes clear records and named contacts especially valuable. Begin with the education setting and describe the barrier in terms of the learner's real day: where it occurs, what makes it worse and what has helped.

Ask the teacher, ALNCo, nursery or college team what support can begin now. If further help is needed, ask which part of the Powys inclusion system will be involved and how the family will be kept informed.

Powys County Council's ALN system includes the Tyfu gateway, the Tyfu platform and the Powys Inclusion Panel. The gateway is a first point of contact for schools, parents and professionals. The platform records a learner's inclusion pathway, while the panel coordinates decisions about requests for council additional learning provision or NHS support.

Powys Teaching Health Board runs a children and young people's neurodevelopment service for families in the county. It works with health and education to understand different parts of a learner's life. An assessment can contribute useful information, but it should not hold up education support for barriers that are already known.

Practical next steps

Ask the setting to record what it is trying, who is responsible and when the support will be reviewed. If a request goes through Tyfu or a panel, ask what has been requested, when it was submitted and how the decision will be communicated. If an IDP is prepared, check that the additional learning provision is specific and measurable in everyday practice.

Use the health board's current referral information for a neurodevelopmental request. Record whether an appointment is online or in person, its location and any travel or communication adjustment the learner needs. Keep one short chronology so that council, school and health actions remain distinct but connected.
