How support is organised in Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan includes busy towns, coastal communities and rural areas, so the people involved in a child's support may not all work in the same place. Begin with the person who sees the difficulty most clearly, such as the teacher, ALNCo, nursery practitioner or college team.

Describe the barrier rather than waiting for a label. Explain what the learner finds difficult, when it happens, what has already been tried and what would make education more accessible. Ask what support can start now and when its effect will be reviewed.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is the local education authority. Its step-by-step ALN guidance says that a parent or carer who is concerned should first speak to the child's teacher or ALNCo. If the school agrees that the learner has ALN, it should work with the child and family to create an individual development plan.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board provides community paediatrics for children who live in Cardiff and the Vale and need care or support in the community. Health professionals may contribute useful evidence, but education support should respond to an identified learning barrier while any health referral or assessment continues. Practical next steps

Ask the setting to put the concern, present support and review date in writing. If the learner may need additional learning provision, ask who is responsible for deciding whether they have ALN and whether the school, college or council would maintain an IDP.

For health involvement, record the exact team, referral purpose and next expected contact. If travel between home, education and appointments makes coordination harder, keep a short shared summary of the learner's needs and agreed adjustments. At each review, compare what was promised with what happened and what changed for the learner.
